About WinRAR
WinRAR is the reference implementation for the RAR format, and that is its main reason to exist: it is the only application that creates RAR and RAR5 archives, including the features other tools cannot produce — recovery records that repair damaged archives, solid compression across a whole archive, and multi-volume splitting with per-volume recovery.
It also handles ZIP, 7z, TAR, GZIP, ISO and the rest for extraction, integrates with the Explorer context menu, and supports AES-256 encryption with encrypted file names.
Licence status: WinRAR is commercial software with a 40-day evaluation period. After that a licence is required. It is widely described as free because the trial keeps working, but that is not the licence — this catalog reports it as paid and links to RARLAB's own download page.
